Fenerbahce Medicana ISTANBUL (TUR) 0-3 Vero Volley MONZA (ITA)

The Italians, who in the previous club competitions season participated in the CEV Challenge Cup (finishing second), controlled the match against the hosts of Istanbul, and leave the Turkish capital with important points.

It was a close call in the opener of the game, with the two teams chasing each other in the score since the very beginning. However, the hosts of Fenerbahce were able to take the lead at 13-11. Their opponents didn’t give in and, seizing all their opportunities, were able to turn the tables for 25-23. Vero Volley did manage to record more points from attack (16 to 14) in this set.

Inspired by their good performance in the first set, the Italians started off better in the second part as well (5-2). The hosts tried to breathe down their opponents’ necks (7-8), but Vero Volley did not allow any big surprises. Despite letting more own errors affect the score (eight to six), they were better on attacking again (19 to nine winning spikes) and even the improved performance on the block by Fenerbahce (three to zero kill blocks) did not stop them getting closer to the win (25-20).

Vero Volley took the leadership position in the third set as well (11-5), but the Turkish showed fighting spirit throughout the set. Nevertheless, it was the Italian squad who emerged victorious at 25–23 thanks to scoring more on their opponents errors (seven to four) and one more successful attack (17 to 16).

For a second consecutive #CLVolleyM match of his team this year, Ibrahim Lawani grabbed the MVP award, finishing with 17 points (63% exc. in attack).

“This win here in Istanbul is very important for us. We are in a difficult moment in the season, we are facing some injuries, and our roster is not completed. Therefore, this win is even more important, and comes against a very good team. It gives us confidence.”

CHAUMONT VB 52 (FRA) 0-3 JASTRZEBSKI Wegiel (POL)

The city of Chaumont experienced for the first time the emotion, called #CLVolleyM, as the local heroes from Chaumont VB 52 welcomed the Polish powerhouse and 2024 silver medallists of Jastrzebski Wegiel. The roster of the Poles includes two Olympic champions from team France, which made the atmosphere in the French town even more spectacular.

Jastrzebski took control over what was happening on the court right after the first referee whistle (8-4 in their favour). The guests outplayed their opponents, emerging victorious at 25-23, being better on blocking (two to one) and recorded more direct points from the serving line (two to zero). Chaumont were slightly better in attack (15 to 14 winning spikes).

The players coached by Marcelo Mendez were the dominating team in the second set as well, keeping the leadership position and finishing with 15 winning spikes (to 12) and two kill blocks (to zero) for 25-18 in this part.

Nothing changed much in the third set either, with the Poles being the better team and deservedly securing the win at 25-20 with 15 winning spikes (to 10).

Tomasz Fornal was named MVP of the game with 14 points to his name (59% exc. in attack).

“We played a good game, controlling it completely. Congrats to Chaumont as well, good play. The atmosphere was great - playing in France, and after the Olympics, is great - the gym is full, and there’s great emotion. We have to remain focused and keep winning in three sets.”
