Benfica fight back to defeat Maribor in Lisbon

The third round of the CEV ZEREN Group Champions League Volley Women brought more drama on Thursday night in Lisbon, where Sport Lisboa e Benfica came from behind to earn a 3–1 victory over OTP Banka Branik Maribor, keeping their hopes alive of reaching the main phase of Europe’s top club competition.

Maribor got off to an impressive start, quickly building a 12–5 lead in the opening set, fueled by powerful attacks from Iza Mlakar. Although Benfica gradually found their rhythm and evened the score at 15–15 following a mistake by Jularić Nika, Maribor held their ground to take the first set and seize the early advantage.

Benfica came back determined in the second set, improving their defense and serving with greater precision to win 25–18, leveling the match. The third set was a tough one, with both teams exchanging points deep into extra rallies. Benfica eventually edged out Maribor 28–26 to go up 2–1.

With momentum fully on their side, Benfica stayed in control in the fourth set. They defended well, took advantage of Maribor’s errors, and finished the job 25–19, sealing a comeback victory in front of an energetic home crowd.

Claudia Anne Dillon stood out with a stellar performance, earning MVP honors. She finished with 17 points, including 5 kill blocks and 1 ace, playing a key role in Benfica’s comeback with a dominant display at the net.
