Overview

Lokomotiv Kaliningrad Region are tied with Allianz MTV and Dinamo on number of wins, but after snatching a point in the loss to their Moscow compatriots and defeating the Germans in straight sets, they edge ahead to the second place in the table on four points, against three each for the two rivals. Since that shutout of Allianz in Istanbul, Lokomotiv had been on a six-game winning streak in the Russian Superliga until last Thursday, when they lost their most recent match to Leningradka Saint Petersburg in five sets. They are placed fourth in their domestic standings on a record of 13 wins and four defeats.
The most decorated club in the history of the competition, 11-time club continental champions Dinamo Moscow, may be bottom of the table, but by no means have given up hope to make the quarterfinals of this year’s edition. They have been on a victory run in the Russian Superliga after returning from Istanbul, improving to 16-1 to hold on to the top of the standings. The squad from Moscow also reached the national cup final, but lost it to Dinamo-Ak Bars Kazan in four sets.

Dinamo Moscow shine in block against Kaliningrad

Article

Dinamo Moscow bounce from the bottom of Pool D table, after their win in an all-Russian match against Lokomotiv KALININGRAD Region. Moscow beat Kaliningrad in straight sets, gaining 3 points, that allowed them to jump to a second position in the table. Lokomotiv KALININGRAD Region, who held that position at the start of second leg, are now fourth in the table with the four points they won at the end of first tournament in Istanbul.

For those who followed earlier Pool D match on Tuesday there was an air of familiarity about the opening set. Dinamo Moscow, who were trailing behind Lokomotiv KALININGRAD Region throughout the first set, found themselves chasing the score from 13-18 behind to making things level at 20-20. From that point onward the team from Moscow, with Tatiana Romanova working steadily at the service line, gained five more points, winning the first set 25-20. Dinamo Moscow gained an early lead at 7-3, thanks to Tatiana Romanova who stepped on the service line once more. Unlike Kaliningrad in the first set, Moscow maintained the point-gap that slowly increased until Dinamo closed the set at 25-12. Nataliya Goncharova and Natalia Pereira became the leading scorers of their team with 12 and 9 points respectively.
The last set was the closest among both teams, as neither allowed their opponent to get too far ahead on the scoreboard. Moscow were led by their Brazilian star Natalia, who scored 7 points in this set alone, as Dinamo secured their first three-set victory in the competition, finishing the last set at 25-23.

  • Nataliya Goncharova was named MVP of the match, scoring 16 points for Dinamo Moscow, all of which were winning spiked
