Match Report

Calcit Volley KAMNIK v ŁKS Commercecon ŁÓDŹ

Article

The small Slovenian town of Kamnik was eagerly awaiting tonight’s return match of the 2nd Round of qualifications for the Champions League. Using the home court as a strong advantage, Calcit Volley Kamnik was hoping for a surprise and their third appearance in the regular part of the champions league in their history. In the first match, they stood no chance against LKS Commercecon Lodz making a three-set win. Although the Slovenes today left with a far better impression than a week ago, LSK Commercecon Lodz is moving forward to the elite league, while Calcit Volley Kamnik will continue their European season in the CEV Cup.

With Aleksandra Wojcik serving, the guests took the lead with 2-5, but the home team responded quickly. With Eva Zatković scoring, she was also on the serve, they tied the result at the fifth point, and with Lucy Charuk’s block Calcit Volley took the lead with 8-7. The set continued in the favour of the home team, showing good game in the field, but making too many mistakes on the serve, so they didn0t gain any advantage. On the other hand, the Poles were far more accurate serving, making fewer mistakes in this element of the game, while Katarzyna Zarolinska-Krol and Katarina Lazović threatened in the attack. This gave them a two-point advantage before entering the final minutes of the first set (18-20). Lazović’s ace, she scored six aces in the first game, locked the set.

At the beginning of the second set, Zarolinska-Krol was causing troubles to Kamnik's receivers, but after falling behind by four points (3-7), the Slovenian national champions returned to the game. Zatković and Brulec Kostić had a lot of credit for this, as they put their team in the lead again (10-9). Radišković added her part, forcing the Italian on the bench of Lodz, Giuseppe Cuccarini, to a half-minute break with two consecutive points. Calcit Volley took the lead with 14-12, and with Charuk's block with 15-12. A bit of incoherence at the home team's reception, two consecutive aces by Nadja Ninković and Aleksandra Pasznik's block brought a turnaround and the guests' lead with 17-18. Calcit Volley took the lead with 20-19 through Martina Guiggi, but the Poles reached a high 20-23 with four consecutive points. The set was more or less done at this point, as well as the answer to a question which team will play in the Champions League later in the season.

Although the winner was decided, Calcit Volley has not yet come to terms with the defeat in the return match. They took advantage of the lack of concentration of the Poles and even got a six-point advantage on the serve of Manja Jerala (11-5). After lag of seven points (14-7), Cuccarini intervened with his second time-out. However, the high difference did not put the home team to sleep, after the Brulec Kostić’s block, they escaped by eight points (20-12). Such was the difference at the end of the set, in which they took advantage of the second final ball.

The Poles started the fourth set more convincingly, taking a three-point lead with Alagierska on the opening ball (3-6). With two blocks by Pacak and an own mistake of the home team, it was 4-12 on the scoreboard. The second Jemec’s time-out did not help the team from Kamnik, although they stopped the attack of the visiting team, but Lodz did not allow a complete comeback. The home players halved their lead several times, the last time with the result of 16-20, and the match ended with a successful spike by Katarina Lazović.
