JASTRZEBSKI Wegiel one step closer to the semis
JASTRZEBSKI Wegiel did their job right in the first quarter-final against VfB Friedrichshafen, seizing a straight sets victory. Thanks to this success, the Polish put one foot in the #CLVolleyM semis, as in the rematch, they will need two sets only to proceed ahead.
This was the third victory for Jastrzebski this season against this opponent, as the two teams were in the same group in the pool phase (when the Polish claimed a 3-0 and 3-1 wins).
The deciding rematch between the two teams is scheduled for March 15 in Poland.
On Thursday, in the last Quarter-final of the week, the guests from Wegiel controlled completely the game.
Jakub POPIWCZAK was their hidden “weapon” during the first set, as the Polish performed outstanding in defence, being able to save almost every German attack, and giving confidence to his team.
The next two sets unfolded in the same scenario, and while the guests were performing nearly to perfection in the different components, their rivals struggled with finding their rhythm.
The strong performance on the serve (eight to zero aces) sealed the deal for Jastrzebski, who used their serving to disappoint Friedrichshafen’s reception. This led to the German having problems with organising their attacks, thus making it easier for Wegiel’s defence.
The only component where the “Häfler” did better was blocking, as they recorded six kill blocks to three by the Polish.
In attacking, it was again the guest side that finished better - 40 to 29 winning spikes.
Tomasz FORNAL was named MVP of the game with 13 points to his name (incl. three aces)
The game was a special one for the Polish setter of VfB Friedrichshafen - Mateusz Biernat, who grew up only a few minutes away from Jastrebie-Zdroj, and came in during the third set, receiving the chance to show his skills.
Mark Lebedew„Even if you cannot see it on the scoreboard, my team played really good in some moments, but the opponents defended in an outstanding way. Even if they aced us too often, we spiked really good during the beginning of the first set.”
Head coach of VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN
Tomasz FORNAL“This is important step to the semifinals. But we still need to play the game in Poland next week. To me, it is great to be the MVP tonight, but our whole team did really good in all the components.”
