CEV Champions League Volley 2021 Women
Prior to taking to the court for their first tournament, Robin de Kruijf joined Dave and Ci on The Ace Space Podcast to talk about anything and everything, whilst also answering some questions from fans. Here are some of her top quotes from the conversation.
On the start of the Champions League"I am super excited that it is finally about to start. We’ve been talking since the start of the season about the start of the Champions League. We’ve had enough troubles in the past with the “under dog” and I feel like Champions League is a such an opportunity for everyone, so they come full in. Sometimes those are the harder matches to play.”
On hosting the first Pool C tournament in CONEGLIANO"We have it very luxurious as we can be at home for the first round - I am excited about that. It’s going to be without an audience but still to play at your own gym and stay in your own place is something we are really happy about!"
On whether it is better to be the underdog or not"Oh I love to be the underdog. You have nothing to lose, you only have something to win! It’s an honour to be the non-underdog but this always brings pressure like you always have to win and sometimes you have to say you should not lose a set to show you are the better team.”
On her injury record to date“This is the thing with sports, there is no way to guarantee anything. You can get out of bed and twist your ankle. I know weak spots and I am working hard to keep it them under control. That is the best way I can prepare my body for every practise or match, and the rest is just a part of luck. Nothing guaranteed there but I cross my fingers that it is going to be good.”
On what book she would recommend reading before bed“I am a romantic person, chick flick and everything. So I would suggest 'Seven Sisters' I enjoyed that way too much. It is seven books and all about a sister, but it is more for women.”
On what musical instrument she would like to playThe Piano, because I bought one during the lockdown. Now I left it behind in Holland as I realised I was not really going to play it. I love the guitar too because it is so easy just to take. I bought one last year but I was just not able to play it – my hands are too big.”
On what she loves to do away from Volleyball“I love to go for long lunches, dinners, have some wine. Also I like to play games. I love Monopoly, if I win. I have only played it once with teammates, with Asia and Kim during Lockdown but I lost really early and Asia was just winning so easily! We still have to re-do it sometime but I think we are all a little scared about it.”
On how much longer she hopes to play for the Dutch National Team"“I don’t know yet. I do feel like I am getting older, I feel my knee and everything which I have to pay a lot of attention to so I don’t know how much longer I will want to play – because it is intense. Also with this we’ll just see how it goes and how the body keeps up.”
