For most teams, the Final Four is a destination.
For VakifBank Istanbul, it is a return.

Europe’s most decorated club arrive once again on the biggest stage of the season, carrying not only expectations, but a legacy built over years of dominance. Multiple continental titles have made decisive weekends a familiar setting for VakifBank, and now, with the Final Four in Istanbul, they step into a stage that feels both elite and deeply personal.

Yet this year’s story carries a different rhythm.

Guidetti has led VakifBank Istanbul to multiple European titles and returns to another Final Four on home soil

Their path here has not been built on straightforward victories, but on resilience. Tight matches, demanding tie-breaks, and high-pressure moments have shaped their campaign. It is a route that has revealed as much about their mentality as their technical quality.

“I think that we are a team that knows how to fight,” said head coach Giovanni Guidetti. “Many, many matches this year have finished 3-2 for us. We like to fight; we never give up. I think the spirit of the team was amazing all over the season.”

That fighting spirit has carried VakifBank through one of the most demanding schedules in Europe. They faced elite opposition repeatedly, from battles with Savino Del Bene Scandicci in the Champions League group stage to knockout clashes against Numia Vero Volley Milano, before navigating a fierce domestic run that brought Turkish Cup and league success.

But if resilience has defined the journey, evolution has defined the team.

Guidetti believes this squad arrives in Istanbul stronger and more prepared than a year ago.

“Last year we arrived in the Final Four with two players at their first Final Four of the CEV Champions League,” he reflected. “This year we come with players who have already experienced at least one time the Final Four.”

That added maturity has been visible across the roster, and nowhere more than in the rise of Marina Markova.

With 174 points in the competition, Markova ranks among the top scorers of the season and has emerged as one of VakifBank’s most reliable attacking options. Yet for her, the role goes beyond numbers.

“I see my role probably as one of the leaders in the team,” she said. “It was one of my goals at the beginning of the season to be a reliable teammate. Of course, my strongest suit is attack, but as an outside hitter, I also have to contribute in other parts of the game.”

That mindset reflects the broader identity of this VakifBank side.

While global stars remain central to their ambitions, their strength lies in distribution rather than dependence. The offence is shared, responsibilities are balanced, and every position contributes to the collective system. It is a structure that allows them to adapt under pressure, and one that has become a hallmark of Guidetti’s teams.

“We have a very good combination between a great player in every position,” he explained. “I think that we are very strong in every position of the court.”

For Markova, that balance is a competitive advantage.

“Having multiple options for attack gives opportunities to showcase strategy,” she said. “And for us attackers, having other people to help can take off the physical and mental load, because you know you can trust your teammates.”

Now, that collective trust will be tested on home soil.

Playing the Final Four in Istanbul adds emotional weight, but VakifBank approach it with perspective rather than pressure.

“In Istanbul, we have a sentence that we carried with us for many years,” Guidetti said. “The pressure is a privilege that we deserve.”

It is a philosophy rooted in experience, an understanding that expectations are not burdens, but signs of belonging at the highest level.

For Markova, returning to the Final Four in Istanbul represents more than another milestone.

“Getting in the Final Four is not enough,” she said. “This is a great opportunity to show our hard work playing against the top teams to the people here in Istanbul.”

And that may define VakifBank more than any statistics.

For them, reaching the Final Four is never the conclusion. It is the beginning of another opportunity to perform, to prove, and to add another crown to a legacy already written among Europe’s elite.
