Asterix Avo BEVEREN players regrouped after losing the re-match with the Slovenian champions

OTP Banka Branik MARIBOR made a flying start to the match, completely dominating Asterix Avo BEVEREN in the opening two sets (25-20, 25-11). The Belgian visitors fought back in the third set to keep their hopes alive (25-20), but the home side responded strongly in the fourth (25-22), securing a convincing 3-1 victory and forcing a decisive Golden Set. The visitors opened the Golden Set with a 4-0 lead, putting immediate pressure on the Slovenian champions. Despite their determination to close the gap, the home side struggled to find a way back into contention. Asterix Avo maintained control and eventually sealed a 15-6 victory, thus securing their place in the next round of the CEV Champions League.

Naja Kajzersperger, middle blocker of OTP Banka Branik MARIBOR: “We all wanted this victory and a place in the next round, and I think that determination was reflected in our fighting spirit and the effort we showed on the court. Despite a strong performance throughout the regular match, we did not get off to the best start in the Golden Set. But that is Volleyball – things can change very quickly. Every single one of us gave everything we had, but unfortunately, things did not go our way tonight. Still, I am proud of the team and confident that our hard work will pay off next time.”

Head coach Frederik De Veylder made the right adjustments to make it work for his team

“We struggled defensively in the opening two sets, but then we made some tactical adjustments and switched from Plan A to Plan B, which worked really well. Our middle blockers, in particular, stepped up their game and made a huge difference, making things easier for the rest of the team and ultimately helping us secure the victory.”
