    Overview

    Still undefeated in this campaign a three-time #CLVolleyM champions TRENTINO Itas will face BERLIN Recycling Volley at majestic Max-Schmeling-Halle. The teams played against each other back in the 2014 Champions League group phase, then both teams celebrated victories on their home soils, respectively. This season, Trentino's star Nimir Abdel-Aziz amazed playing impressively not only as an opposite, but also as a setter. On the other side, Berlin just announced that their star spiker Benjamin Patch has extended his contract to 2024.

    · This is the second time BERLIN Recycling Volleys and TRENTINO Itas have been drawn together in the Champions League, after the 2013/14 league round.
    · Both sides won their home game in the 2013/14 Champions League group phase. On 24 October 2013, Diatec TRENTINO won 3-1 in Trento, while BERLIN Recycling Volleys claimed a straight-set victory in the reverse fixture in Berlin on 18 December 2013. Both teams progressed to the playoff 12 round (Diatec TRENTINO as group winners).
    · BERLIN Recycling Volleys lost their only previous Champions League knockout tie against Italian opposition, a 1-3 defeat against Cucine Lube CIVITANOVA in the 2016/17 third-place decider in Rome.

Actually, it is much more than just that – since this venue has played host to an impressive number of major international competitions as well, such as the 2002 FIVB Women’s World Championship, 2003 EuroVolley Men, 2013 EuroVolley Women, as well as the historic CEV Champions League Volley 2019 Super Finals back in May – to name only a few highlights. The Hall also plays as hosts to the Berlin Recycling Volleys, Germany's most decorated volleyball club with 10 Bundesliga titles and a CEV cup title in 2015/2016.     Abdel-Aziz leads Trentino to important quarterfinal victory

    From a very beginning of the game Trentino Itas were dominating on court earning significant 12-6 lead and improving it further, despite problems in reception (only 14% of positive receptions in this part!). There was no surprise that it was Nimir Abdel-Aziz being the strongest player of Italian squad with seven points in this part. In the end of the set Berlin improved their game, but it was definitely too late.

    The second set was a way more competitive. Both teams were still away from their top performance in receptions, but Trentino impressed in attack, recording 71% of success in this element. The teams fought for the second part until the last point. Timothee Carle of Berlin scored in this part as many as 8 points, but it was not enough against Trentino.

    The Italian club were extremely motivated to close the game in third set, but Berlin were fighting as hard as they could, chasing the score. They tied at 20-20. Berlin got their first set point at 24-23 after blocking Nimir Abdel-Aziz, but it was quickly denied. The hosts needed in total four set points to close the set 28-26.

    The fourth part started very competitive, but it changed when, from 10-10, Trentino scored four in a row. The Italian put more pressure on the opponent, once the hosts were not able to find a right answer, thus the advantage of Trentino was improving up to seven points what was enough to end the game without bigger problems with the second match point, won in lucky way by Trentino's libero Salvatore Rossini who was saving the ball and trying to set it to Abdel-Aziz. But the Dutch didn't manage to touch the ball, which either way landed perfectly on the side of the opponent.

    - Normally, the BR Volleys could have counted on a full volleyball temple behind them - in their last appearance in a play-offs in 2018, more than 6300 spectators had supported the team - now, at least, they played in front of nearly 500 cardboard fans which fans could buy for all matches in Max-Schmeling-Halle.
    - Nimir Abdel-Aziz once again lived up to his reputation as the most feared service player in the Champions League. The opposite was unstoppable, especially in the first set, serving eight times in a row. However, Berlin could not find a way against him in attack either, in the end he recorded a success rate of 71 percent.
    - Not only Abdel-Aziz showed a strong game, but also the Italian middle block scored almost at will. Marko Podrascanin and former Berlin player Srecko Lisinac collected a total of 23 points and five blocks.
    - Well-deserved MVP award went to Nimir Abdel-Aziz who scored as many as 28 points including 3 aces, 1 block and 24 winning spikes (71% of success in attack).
    - Timothee Carle was a top scorer of Berlin with 18 points.

    "We had to work hard. It is the quarterfinal of the Champions League.  Every team is good now. In the moment you are not really concentrated or you start to make some errors, the other team is going to win the set. But in general we kept them under a good pressure in the service. In block and defense we played a good match. You can always improve  some things but the result is the most important thing and we took the three points which is important for the next week."
