Overview

The Italian-Turkish clash promises to be a super thrilling Match of the Week. The hosts Unet e-work BUSTO ARSIZIO reached the quarterfinals with only one defeat losing in the pool standing only by one point with their domestic rival from Scandicci. Once, Eczacibasi Vitra ISTANBUL are still undefeated in this #CLVolleyW campaign. The teams locked horns already on three occasions, all games were won by Turkish powerhouse, the most recent was an eightfinal of the 2018 CEV Cup, but back in the 2015 they played against each other in the Champions League final. Busto Arsizio are the reigning CEV Cup champions and now are looking for their third medal in the Europe's most prestigious club competition after winning bronze in 2013 and silver in 2015. While Eczacibasi, who were already nine times among Europe's best four, earning the title in 2015, silver in 1980 and bronze in 2000 and 2017, hope for their second continental crown.

Quest for spots among Europe’s best four about to begin

"It is a quarterfinal of the Champions League, a match to be played against one of the best eight teams in Europe, and therefore does not need any great introduction. Eczacibasi can boast players on the roster who are among the strongest in the world, so we have to think about getting ready physically and being aggressive immediately. Only then the game can be very competitive from the first to the last point."

Match Report

Busto Arsizio overpower Eczacibasi in dramatic four-setter

Article

Unet e-work BUSTO ARSIZIO were motivated to challenge their unbeaten rival Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL. Using the advantage of home court they opened the game with two point lead. Jovana Stevanovic and Alexa Gray with their powerful spikes moved the result constantly further up to 12-6. Eczacibasi managed to shorten the distance to two points at 16-14, but then the hosts immediately re-built advantage winning the first part with six-point-advantage.

It was a cold shower for Eczacibasi who totally refined their game. They started the second set with significant 9-3 lead. Tijana Boskovic showed her power in attack, scoring as many as 5 points in this element. The hosts tried to fight back, but struggling in attack they were forceless against the Turkish team.

The hosts returned on the court in even more fighting mood. After competitive beginning, thanks to outstanding performance of Camilla Mingardi (7 points in this set) and great efforts in block, they jumped out with the score reaching 19-12 lead and they never looked back taking this part confidentaly with Stevanovic's spike.

The fourth set started with 8-3 for Eczacibasi, but the hosts were super motivated to use their opportunity and quickly not only erased the gap at 9-9, but also stepped up front scoring in total 11 points in a row - from 5-9 to 16-9 (with Mingardi on serving line). But, this - at first glance - solid advantage was not enough as Eczacibasi fought back to tie at 19-19. Then, we witnessed passionate point-by-point end of the set. Busto denied two set points, to eventually use their second chance to close the game with Alexa Gray's spike.

- Busto dominated in block 14 to 7 won by Eczacibasi.
- It was the fourth encounter between these teams and the first won by Busto.
- Tijana Boskovic topped the scorers' chart with 30 points (all came from attack, she had 49% of success in this skill), she was also named the MVP of the game.
- Camilla Mingardi scored 19 points for Busto (16 kills and 3 aces).
- Eczacibasi played without few of their key players as their middle blocker Hande Baladin and setter Saliha Sahin stayed at home due Covid, once Jordan Thompson is injured. Once, their outside spiker Madison Rigdon made her #CLVolleyW debut in the Eczacibasi's shirt in the decisive part of the first set.

"I'm really happy with this great victory. My team proved that we can play Volleyball on really high level, but we have to play like this constantly. Because it is not enough for next game in Turkey, we have to play stronger. But these three points from today's game are like gold for us."
