  • On March 11, 2020, Gheorghe Cretu together with the Russian champion Kuzbas Kemerovo eliminated ZAKSA in the quarter-finals of the CEV Champions League. Now, for the first time as ZAKSA's coach, he will compete as their headmaster in this prestigious competition.
  • This is not the first encounter of coach Cretu and the team from Kędzierzyn. In the 2001/2 season in the CEV Champions League as a coach of Hotvolleys Wien, he played with the then Mostostal Azoty Kędzierzyn Koźle in group games (group B). At that time, his current team was on top, which under the leadership of coach Waldemar Wspaniały won 3-2 in Vienna and 3-0 in Opole.
  • For the ZAKSA team it will be the first clash in the history of the CEV Champions League with a team from Slovenia.
  • In the match against the Slovenes, ZAKSA will appear in front of the net in an optimal combination, both in terms of players and the training staff.

" Of course I clearly remember the success in Kędzierzyn with the Russian champion from Kezmerovo, but now I am thinking only about how to best present myself with my team in this year's competition. Our goal? For now, of course, promotion from the group"

Gheorghe Cretu

Article

The reigning #CLVolleyM champions Grupa Azoty Zaksa Kędzierzyn Koźle started their new campaign in front of home crowd with encounter against the Slovenian champion OK Merkur Maribor. The guest team, could also count on their fans as they were cheered by a group of 15 fans from Maribor. First timeout was called by the the squad from Slovenia after a rather quick 5: 1 for the Zaksa. The good period of the set for Slovenians came quickly after this. Roland Gergye's service ace reduced the advantage to only 14:12 for the European club champions from Kedzierzyn Kozle. For a moment it smelled like a surprise because the guests trailed only by one point (17:16) but the end part of the first set showed some 'cold blood' in the Zaksa team that won 25:19 after a triple block on Ziga Donik. In the first set, the hosts successfully blocked 4 times and the guests only once.
Two service aces in a row by Kamil Semeniuk and 7: 3 for the Polish runners-up in the national league. 10: 4 and 14: 6 for Zaksa after Kamil Semeniuk's actions.
Coach Cretu lets substitutes for the first time at 19:11 on the scoretable, Bartłomiej Kluth and Wojciech Żaliński enter the court.
Gergye's service which was ruled out ended the second set 25:18 and 2: 0 for defending the title. - In the first stage of the third set draw (3: 3) after successful attacks from the visitors and then lead 5: 3 5: 4 for OK Merkur after Kluth's aut attack, who changed the first attacker Łukasz Kaczmarek at the end of the first set. A little surprise at least for a moment!
After Uros Pavlovic's ace, the visitors again unexpectedly took the lead 12:11, even though they already had 3 points behind.
The host team quickly "tempered" the enthusiasm of the Slovenians.
Blocks of Semeniuk and Marcin Janusz on Gergeye produced clear advantage 22:16 and Semeniuk's ace clinched the victory in the last set by Zaksa 25:17 and the whole match in straight sets (3:0) for the polish squad. MVP: Kamil Semeniuk (17 points: 11pts attacks, 2 blocks, 4 aces)
