"The second match of the Champions League is very important for us like all other matches. That's why we're getting ready. We are a good team. Right now we have to focus on the next game. We want to return with a win and go to the World Club Championship with morale."

Mina Popovic
Middle Blocker Fenerbahçe Opet ISTANBUL

"We have the last two games to play before the world clubs. Maybe we will play with a team that is not as strong as we are on it, we will shape it in a moral and well-trained way towards good world football training to play a game that can be developed in such a way that it can be developed as a training."

Naz Aydemir Akyol
Setter Fenerbahçe Opet ISTANBUL

"Fenerbahce are the favourites in our pool. I hope we will play without pressure to show our capabilities and be able to please our supporters. It is not an easy pool, but it is important for us to keep getting better. I do not think Fenerbahce will underestimate us. They will be as concentrated as possible."

Borislav Krachanov
Head coach of Maritza PLOVDIV

"The Champions League is a celebration for me. I want us to to celebrate without pressure on the court and we'll see what happens. Fenerbahce are strong, with very good players, but still this is sports - anything is possible. One's strength goes as far as one's dreams do. We dream, we train every day and we will give our best."

Match Report

Fenerbahçe too strong for Maritza

Article

The Turkish grand Fenerbahçe Opet ISTANBUL secured second victory in the Pool D of the CLVolleyW, outclassing the Bulgarian champions of Maritza Plovdiv. In a match that lasted 101 minutes, the home side tried to surprise the players of head coach Zoran Terzic, but could eventually take only a set. Led by star player Arina Fedorovtseva (MVP of the match with 26 points to her name), Fenerbahce could find their play and, statistically, outclassed the opponent on the winning spikes (62 to 36), finishing as well better on the block (seven to five).

Fenerbahce dominated on all counts in the opening set, taking control of the game and finishing with as many as 16 winning spikes. The hosts, on the other side, were struggling to find their rhythm. They did so in the beginning of the second set that started off with two back-to-back aces by Kristina Guncheva served towards Arina Fedorovtseva. Coach Borislav Krachanov surprised the opponents with an unusual line-up in set two. Maritza showed great hustle in defence and blocking. Maritza’s setter, Kristina Guncheva showed tricks on the net, helping her team to level the score.

Coach Terzic changed setters (Naz Aydemir came in) to help Fenerbahce regain the lead in set three, and it worked out fine as his team recorded 17 winning spikes in this part.

Taking the set-lead, the guest didn’t have any problems in the last, fourth set, counting on the serving prowess of Arina Fedorovtseva, who actually scored her first and only ace of the match.

"We won, we took the three points, so we are satisfied with the result today, but everything else wasn't so well. Only in the first set we played at our usual level. Maybe because it was very easy, our players got more relaxed and we had a problem. But it's normal. It happens sometimes, especially to a team that has many games during the season. So we continue in a good mood."

Zoran Terzic
Head coach of Fenerbahce Opet Istanbul

"In such matches, if the opposing team is serving very well and defending very well, you always have difficulties. I think that we had some today. Although we didn't start very well, we finished very well. I am very happy that we won thanks to our team spirit. We were good in defence, and then did very well in offense. We are very happy that we won."

Meliha İsmailoğlu
Player of Fenerbahçe Opet

“We got a great win today, but it wasn't easy for us. The opponent showed excellent performance in defence. However, I am happy that we managed to overcome the difficulties.”

Ana Cristina de Souza
Player of Fenerbahçe Opet

"Today we have to be proud - first, because of our team's performance, and second, because of our team's selfless devotion on the court. The fact that our players got to believe that we were capable of achieving something against a team like Fenerbahce makes me and my staff very pleased with a job well done. We fought well and did not give in through the end."

Borislav Krachanov
Head coach of Maritza Plovdiv

“I am really pleased. We could have won the third set, but after the 20th point, we lost 2-3 easy balls against this really strong team, so they took advantage of it, and seized their chances. The performance that we delivered today could only inspire us to believe even more in ourselves that if we fight for the impossible balls, and play as I team, we can play even better.”

Ivelina Monova
Libero and captain of Maritza Plovdiv
