Intense night in the CEV Champions League Volley 2022 – Women as the remaining four teams in the race for a Round 4 spot met for the first time.

A brief chat between Coach and MVP

At the Sport Hall UB in Serbia, ZOK UB hosted Olympiacos Piraeus in a classic 5- set thriller that had a bit of everything in the mix. A strong start from the Greeks (16-25 first set) sounded the alarm for ZOK UB who pushed hard to take the following two sets.

Olympiacos knew how important winning another set would be keeping in mind the return leg scheduled for next week, and managed to win the 4th set and push the match into a tie break.

The final chapter of the match was similar to what we had seen in the previous four sets, a back and forth exciting match of volleyball tipped in favour of the hosts in the end (15-13 in the tie break).  Despite losing the match, Olympiacos will be looking forward to the return leg in front of the home crowd following a good performance.

The story of the second match of the day was not as intricate as that of the first, with SC Prometey Dnipro from Ukraine managing an emphatic win away from home against Viteos Neuchatel UC (0-3: 19-25, 14-25, 20-25) and becoming the favourite to qualify into the Pool Phase for the first time in their history.

“We have not been able to play at our best and we need it to compete against such a team. Not all of our players were on top and it is pretty rare that this happens.”

Lauren Bertolacci
Head coach of Viteos NEUCHATEL UC

Olivia Wassner, player of Viteos NEUCHATEL UC: “We were not in our best shape. We are not used to playing against such tall and strong players. We really would have hoped to play at our best in front of our home crowd. That did not happen this time around and we will try to do better in the second leg.”

“We played this game according to our original plan and it went really well. I am a little surprised that we won without losing a set, but it is a very good result for us. You never know what can happen in the second leg, but I am quite confident in our qualification to the group stage.”
