  • Second home-match for Knack ROESELARE in their 20th season in the CEV Champions League Volley 2022 Men competition.
  • Together with their opponent VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN and with Noliko/Greenyard MAASEIK, Knack ROESELARE belongs to the top three of teams taking part in most matches in the CEV Champions League in the new formula since 2000-2001.
  • On Wednesday 09 February, Knack ROESELARE and VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN will meet each other for the tenth time in the CEV Champions League. Knack ROESELARE beat the German team eight times in their previous matches. The first time was in the first edition of the CEV Champions League in the season 2000-2001 (3-1 at home and 1-3 away). The last time was earlier this season (December 1st) in their away match in the Ratiopharm-Arena NEU-ULM (2-3 victory).
  • For home-player Arno VAN DE VELDE (middle-blocker), it will be an encounter with his ex-team (season 2020-2021). From that period, only players Dejan Vincic, Ben-Simon Bonin, Lukas Maase and Marcus Böhme still play for VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN.
  • Since their last confrontation in December, two new players will appear on the match sheets. Serbian-born Nikola PEKOVIC replaces Cameron Blair BANN on the libero position in the German team, François LECAT is the new player in the Belgian team and replaces Filip GAVENDA.
  • Last week, Knack ROESELARE strengthened their position at the top of the standings in the Belgium competition with two victories in a row against VBC WAREMME (3-0) and Decospan MENEN (3-1).
  • Last Wednesday, VfB FRIEDERICHSHAFEN caused a stunt by eliminating BERLIN Recycling Volleys with 3-2 in the semi-final of the German Cup.

“In our first match against VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, we had to bring our best volleyball to beat them by 2-3 in five sets. VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN are a team with a lot of physical qualities: a lot of power in attack and strong blocking. It is also a very dynamic team. After beating Berlin Recycling Volleys in the semi-finals of the German Cup, VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN will be in the right flow to meet my team. The key for my team will be teamwork.”

Match Report

Knack ROESELARE victorious after a thrilling five-setter

Article

Knack ROESELARE and VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN delivered the match of the day in Pool A. After a hard-fought match that lasted more than two hours and a half,Knack ROESELARE  proved better, winning a thrilling five-setter.

Overall, Knack were better on attacking (71 to 64). The German team outclassed the opponent on blocking (13 to 10), and aced as many as eight times (to none by Knack).

However, this loss means the end of the CLVolleyM journey for the team, led by Mark Lebedew, as they don’t have any further chances of proceeding ahead.

- The hosts started off better right after the first referee whistle, but with Vojin Cacic on the serve, the guests got closer and equalised at 15-15. However, Knack were able to keep their leadership position and opened in their favour. Knack ROESELARE made the difference in the first set in attack (61% to 48%) with captain Matthijs Verhanneman scoring 6 on 7 attempts (at 86%).

- The German squad dominated fully during the second set, taking control over what was happening on the court and never looking back. VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN disappointed the opponent with powerful play in attack and serve and secure blocking.

- Inspired, the guests took the third set as well, gradually building up a point difference, seizing opportunities with Simon Hirsh on the serve, disappointing the opponents' reception. Knack ROESELARE kept making too many mistakes in their play, while Vojin Cacic continued scoring nearly faultless.

- The fourth set turned out to be a real Volleyball thriller. Knack stormed to a 5-0 lead, Lucas van Berkel helped Friedrichshafen to come back. Knack kept a small point difference, but it wasn’t for a longer time, as van Berkel again on the serve caused them troubles (15-15). An intense “cat and mouse game” until the last minutes of the set is what the fans in the sports hall witnessed afterwards, but the home team showed mental strength and took the fourth set after seven set-balls.

- With Michiel Ahyi on fire, Knack delivered a better performance in the deciding set and congratulated themselves with the victory.

- Michiel Ahyi was awarded MVP after the match. He scored 18 points. Top scorer of the match was Vojin Cacic. He scored 22 points for his team, including four kill blocks. On the home team’s side, Matthijs Verhanneman was top scorer with 19 points.

- Unfortunately, due to a severe injury (sprained ankle), captain Matthijs Verhanneman had to leave the court at the end of set four.

“Today’s victory was very important. We showed some very good volleyball. The audience was amazing and cheered us to a well-deserved victory. We knew that it was going to be a tough match. VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN is a strong team and they put a high pressure on us. Set 4 was very close set but finally our experience made the difference. Now we are looking forward to our two matches in Bulgaria next week.”

Michiel AHYI
Match MVP

“ I am a bit disappointed because we had the match in our hands. We made too many errors at the end of the fourth set and so we lost the match. But of course, Knack ROESELARE is a difficult team to play against because they never give up. We could increase our level during the course of the match but it was not sufficient. Our hope in the next round is over. But both teams showed a great game of volleyball for the audience and that is also very important.”
