Overview

Tenerife LA LAGUNA

Player Statistics

Hungarian defending champions, Vasas Óbuda Budapest found themselves in a comfortable position for the rematch against La Laguna Tenerife, having won in straight sets in Spain last week. The teams started the game really nervously, with many errors on both sides, but it was Tenerife La Laguna who held the lead approaching the end of the first set. The three point advantage wasn’t enough tough, as Vasad, led my middle blocker Ayshan Abdulazimova, and outside hitter Kata Török managed to turn the score around and got the lead (25:23, 1:0).

The visitors were holding on to hope as they started the second set really well with powerful hits by their opposite, Julie Lengweiler. The other opposite, Vasas Óbuda’s Taylor Bannister wasn’t going to be left behind as she hit a series of points of her own and the home team turned the score around once again. The Spaniards put up a real fight, but Vasas was the better team on court and by reaching the 25 point mark first, they qualified for the 4th round without even losing a set in the qualifications (25:19, 2:0).

Having secured their spot in the group stage, Vasas Óbuda’s coach, Giannis Athanasopoulos introduced a series of changes for the third set, while La Laguna Tenerife continued the game with their starting six. The Hungarians continued to play as they did before, confident and efficient, led by their captain and MVP of the game, Ayshan Abdulazimova. Vasas finished the job by winning the third set as well, as celebrations began in the Hungarian capital. Vasas Óbuda will play in the 4th round of the Champions League for the second time in their history (25:21, 3:0).

"I’m very happy, when I came here to Vasas, this was one of my biggest goals to lead them again into the 4th round of the Champions League. Today the first set was decisive, we came back from down, and after that we showed that we have the better team. Congrats to all the players, in the goup stage we will try to play our best volleyball.”

Giannis Athanasopoulos
Head Coach Vasas Óbuda BUDAPEST

"We had our good and bad moments, but today our reception wasn’t good in enough to keep the level of the home team. Vasas served very well, we missed our chance to win a set in the first one, but I hope against Kamnik we can reach the 4th round”

Juan Diego Garcia
Head Coach Tenerife LA LAGUNA
