General

  • Three teams from Türkiye and all from Istanbul have qualified for the semi-finals of the 2022/23 women's CEV Champions League: Fenerbahçe Opet ISTANBUL, VakifBank ISTANBUL and Eczacibasi Dynavit ISTANBUL.
  • It is the first time in Champions League history that three teams from one city have reached the semi-finals of a Champions League campaign (women's or men's).
  • The only other country to have had three clubs in the semi-finals of a Champions League campaign was Italy in the 2020/21 women's Champions League: A. Carraro Imoco CONEGLIANO (winners), Unet e-work BUSTO ARSIZIO and Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA. The other team in that season's semi-finals was VakifBank ISTANBUL (runners up).

Head-to-Head

  • VakifBank ISTANBUL and Fenerbahçe Opet ISTANBUL have been drawn together for the fifth time in the Champions League, and for the fourth time in the semi-finals, after 2010/11, 2015/16 and 2021/22. They also met in the Playoffs in 2014/15.
  • This is the first time that the same two clubs will have met in the semi-finals in four Champions League campaigns.
  • VakifBank ISTANBUL won all four previous Champions League ties with Fenerbahçe Opet ISTANBUL. They won 3-2 in the one-legged semi-final in 2010/11 (after trailing 0-1 and 1-2 in sets, and winning the fifth set 15-11). They won the play-off tie in 2014/15 (3-1 win, 2-3 loss) and the one-legged semi-final in 2015/16 (3-0).
  • Last season VakifBank ISTANBUL needed a golden set (15-11) to beat Fenerbahçe Opet ISTANBUL in the semi-finals, after a 3-1 win and a 0-3 loss. Gabriela Guimaraes scored 40 points for VakifBank ISTANBUL in those two matches. Melissa Vargas scored 51 points for Fenerbahçe Opet ISTANBUL.
  • Fenerbahçe Opet ISTANBUL beat VakifBank ISTANBUL in the Turkish league 3-0 on 5 February. Vargas scored 23 points for Fenerbahçe Opet ISTANBUL and Paola Egonu had 16 points for VakifBank ISTANBUL.
  • Earlier this season VakifBank ISTANBUL had beaten Fenerbahçe Opet ISTANBUL 3-1 at home on 13 November. Egonu scored 33 points for the hosts that match. Arina Fedorovtseva had 28 points for the visitors.

VakifBank ISTANBUL

  • VakifBank ISTANBUL have won the women's Champions League a record five times, including last season.
  • They were also the last side to retain their trophy in this competition when they won in 2016/17 and 2017/18.
  • VakifBank ISTANBUL have reached the final a record eight times (W5-L3), including in five of the last six completed campaigns (2019/20 season was not completed due to COVID-19). The exception was 2018/19 when they were eliminated in the semi-finals (excludes the 2019/20 season which was halted due to COVID-19).
  • VakifBank ISTANBUL have reached the semi-finals of the Champions League for the 11th straight season since 2012/13 (Champions League record). Note: This includes their progress from the quarter-finals in 2019/20, but the competition was cancelled after the quarter-final stage.
  • VakifBank ISTANBUL have played two Golden Sets in the Champions League (both in the semi-finals). They lost one (14-16) versus Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA in 2018/19 and won one (15-11) versus Fenerbahçe Opet ISTANBUL in 2021/22.
  • Paola Egonu (197) is the club's top scorer in this season's Champions League. Only Volero LE CANNET's Vita Akimova (204) has scored more points in this season.
  • Chiaka Ogbogu has scored 25 points from kill blocks, only Elizaveta Kochurina has scored as many block points (25 for Volero LE CANNET).
  • Ayça Aykaç (42.57%) and Aylin Acar (40.59%) have the highest percentages as receivers in this Champions League season.

Fenerbahçe Opet ISTANBUL

  • Fenerbahçe Opet ISTANBUL are hoping to reach the Champions League final for the third time, after 2009/10 (lost to Volley BERGAMO as FenerbahçeAcibadem ISTANBUL) and 2011/12 (won against RC CANNES as Fenerbahçe Universal ISTANBUL).
  • Fenerbahçe Opet ISTANBUL have reached the semi-finals/Final Four for the seventh time. They lost their last three semi-final ties (2015/16, 2018/19, 2021/22). Last season, they were eliminated by VakifBank ISTANBUL after a golden set (11-15).
  • Arina Fedorovtseva is her team's top scorer in this season's Champions League on 145 points. Last season, Fedorovtseva finished fourth in the scorer ranking on 160 points.
  • Melissa Vargas scored 77 points in this season's Champions League. She had 51 points for Fenerbahçe Opet ISTANBUL in last season's semi-finals against VakifBank ISTANBUL. She added another 23 points against them in their Turkish league clash on 5 February 2023.
  • Fedorovtseva leads all players on 30 aces in this Champions League campaign, 12 more than the next player (18 by Margaret Ann Wolowicz for Tenerife LA LAGUNA).

“We are proud to play in the semi-finals of the #CLVolleyW for the 11th consecutive year. We are also very excited to play with Fenerbahçe. Fenerbahçe is the most in-form team in the world lately. Their performance against the reigning world champion Conegliano was impressive. It will be very, very difficult for us. I've rarely seen a team with 3 offensive players this strong in my career. A very powerful trio in the 3 elements of the game: block, serve and attack. But we are VakıfBank."

Giovanni Guidetti
Head Coach VakifBank ISTANBUL

“Fenerbahce Opet is a very strong team. Just like us. I think it will be a very interesting and exciting match. We want to offer volleyball fans and our supporters an enjoyable game”.

Match Report

VakifBank ISTANBUL v Fenerbahce Opet ISTANBUL

Article 6 April 2023

Fenerbahce Opet Istanbul mastered a 3-0 (25-10, 25-23, 25-20) upset of defending women’s CEV Champions League Volley crown-holders VakifBank Istanbul in the first game of their semifinal series, played at VakifBank Spor Sarayi on Thursday. For the return match, Fenerbahce will welcome VakifBank to the Burhan Felek volleyball hall next Thursday, April 13, at 19:00 local time.

Melissa Vargas hammered the opening point of the first set and Ana Cristina de Souza delivered the 25-10 winner. In between, it was a completely one-sided game with Fenerbahce dominating on all counts, especially in serving (four aces against none), to beat their city rivals by a wide margin and take the lead in the match.

Fenerbahce stormed the second set on a 6-2 run, after five consecutive points on Hristina Vuchkova’s turn to serve. But this time VakifBank fought back, stepping up their spiking and blocking efforts, and not only caught up at 11-11, but also managed to open a three-point lead of their own at 20-17. After 23-21, however, Fenerbahce went on a four-point run crowned by a sub-in Cansu Cetin ace for 25-23.

They showed no signs of slowing down, opened set three with a 4-0 run and never looked back. Their lead went as wide as six points before VakifBank tried fighting back with four in a row to get back to within two at 20-18. Both Paola Egonu and Melissa Vargas were on fire in this set with eight points each, but it was Fenerbahce’s opposite, who delivered the match winner with a sizzling ace for 25-20.

Melissa Vargas finished the game with a match-high 19 points, including three aces and a kill block, and earned the Most Valuable Player Award. Ana Cristina added another 13, all in attack, while Arina Fedorovtseva hammered four aces towards a 12-point match tally. Paola Egonu was VakifBank’s best scorer with 17 points.
