General

It was an all-Italian final on the previous three occasions: Edison Volley MODENA vs Caposud REGGIO CALABRIA (2000/01), Volley BERGAMO vs Asystel NOVARA (2004/05) and Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA vs Imoco Volley CONEGLIANO (2018/19).

Head-to-Head

· Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA defeated Eczacibasi Dynavit ISTANBUL 3-2 in Novara in the first leg of this season's semi-finals on Wednesday 5 April. The Italians decided the fifth set 16-14 in their favour.
· These teams had never met before in the CEV Women's Champions League.
· Eczacibasi Dynavit ISTANBUL lost each of their last four Champions League matches (and a Golden Set) against Italian teams. Those are also the team's last four Champions League defeats.
· Eczacibasi Dynavit ISTANBUL lost their previous two Champions League semi-finals against Italian opposition, both times by 0-3: to Caposud REGGIO CALABRIA in 2000/01 (first edition) and to Volley BERGAMO in 2001/02.
· Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA reached the 2018/19 Champions League final by eliminating Turkish side VakifBank ISTANBUL in the semi-finals. The two-legged tie was decided by a Golden Set following a 3-0 win in Istanbul and 1-3 defeat in Novara. The Italians came out on top in that Golden Set: 16-14.

Eczacibasi Dynavit ISTANBUL

· Eczacibasi Dynavit ISTANBUL reached the Champions League semi-finals six times before (2000/01, 2001/02, 2008/09, 2013/14, 2014/15, 2016/17), but only made it to the final in 2014/15. They went on to lift the trophy that year.
· In 2014/15, they beat city rivals VakifBank ISTANBUL 3-1 in the semi-finals before they achieved a 3-0 victory over Unendo Yamamay BUSTO ARSIZIO in the final. Szczecin (Poland) hosted the Final Four that edition.
· Eczacibasi Dynavit ISTANBUL (winners of the 2021/22 CEV Cup) could become the first team to reach the Champions League final after winning the CEV Cup the season before.
· Eczacibasi Dynavit ISTANBUL had won each of their first eight matches in the 2022/23 Champions League before their 2-3 loss in Novara in the first leg.
· Eczacibasi Dynavit ISTANBUL lost their only Golden Set in the Champions League: 10-15 against Imoco Volley CONEGLIANO in the 2018/19 quarter-finals. The Istanbul side were then known as Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL.
· Tijana Boškovic was the best scorer in the semi-finals first leg in Novara on 28 points, one more than Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA's Ebrar Karakurt (27).
· Samanta Fabris played for the opposition side in the 2015/16 season.

Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA

· Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA can reach the Champions League final for the second time, after 2018/19. They eliminated Turkish side VakifBank ISTANBUL in the semi-finals (3-0, 1-3, 16-14 win in the Golden Set), before beating Imoco Volley CONEGLIANO in the final (3-1).
· Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA's only other semi-final appearance was in 2020/21, when they lost against A. Carraro Imoco CONEGLIANO without winning a set (0-6 on aggregate).
· Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA won six of their seven Champions League matches that went to five sets, only losing the first one: 12-15 against VakifBank ISTANBUL in the 2015/16 group stage.
· Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA's only Golden Set in the Champions League was that aforementioned 16-14 win against VakifBank ISTANBUL in the 2018/19 semi-finals.
· Only Paola Egonu (214, VakifBank ISTANBUL) and Vita Akimova (204, Volero LE CANNET) have scored as many points in the 2022/23 Champions League as Ebrar Karakurt (196).
· Anna Danesi (26) has made the most kill blocks in this season's Champions League. Last season, only Nasya Dimitrova (35, SC Prometey DNIPRO) made as many as 26 kill blocks in the competition.
· McKenzie Adams won the CEV Cup with Eczacibasi Dynavit ISTANBUL last season (final won against Allianz MTV STUTTGART).

"Every player dreams about being part of such an important game: we are fighting to achieve a spot in the Superfinals of the CEV Champions League, and we will match a team full of amazing players. Eczacibasi has a stronger team, but we showed we could play at this level with a very good European campaign. Having won 3-2 in Novara doesn't mean anything: we start 0-0 and have to win another game if we want to play the Finals. We will do our best to make it."

Eczacibasi Dynavit ISTANBUL v Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA

Article

For the first time in history of the CEV Women's Champions League it will be an all-Turkish final to conclude the season in Europe's top tier. Igor Gorgonzola Novara was the last resort for Italy to reach the Super Finals in Turin, but they had no chance in the re-match with Eczacibasi Dynavit Istanbul. The team around coach Ferhat Akbas delivered an excellent performance in the decisive semifinal clash at Burhan Felek Voleybol Salonu ISTANBUL, once their leader Tijana Boskovic played in her own league, scoring 21 points.

As the first-leg semifinal game went into extra time in tie-break, the re-match was expected to be a nail-biting battle. But it turned out to be 80-minute Eczacibasi's show. With a ticket to the Super Finals in Turin at stake both teams started the game highly-focused, producing intense rallies. Although the team around coach Stefano Lavarini played better on blocks (3 points), they also were more keen to commit mistakes (11-7). In the decisive part of the opener, Eczacibasi led by Serbian super duo Maja Ognjenović and Tijana Bosković (7 points) proved better moving from 20-20 to 25-22.

With Irina Voronkova on the service line, Eczacibasi ran away with the score already at 8-4 and improved it further to 18-7. Boskovic played in class of her own - 8 points, including also 2 aces and 2 blocks. She and her teammates enjoyed excellent performance in all skills and dominated on the court, sealing the deal at 25-12. Thus, the team from Istanbul needed only one more set to book a spot in Super Finals.

There was no room for mistakes in the third set. Novara tried their best to keep the pace with Eczacibasi, but Bosković was a player to make a difference again. She contributed with 6 points, having solid support from Hande Baladin and Irina Voronkova who were also highly  efficient in delivering points to the hosts (4 points apiece). Completing the game 25-21, Eczacibasi became the first finalists of the CEV Champions League Volley 2023 - Women.

Tijana Boskovic was a top scorer of the match with 21 points (16 kills - 48% of success in attack, 2 blocks, 3 aces) and once again received a well-deserved MVP award.

On 21 May in Turin, Eczacibasi will have a chance to repeat their achievement from the 2014/2015 season, when they won their only up-to-date #CLVolleyW trophy. On Thursday the game between Fenerbahce and Vakifbank will determine their rival.
