Last year AS CANNES Dragons emerged victorious from a dramatic final of the national league with CHAUMONT VB 52 to crown themselves French champions and secure their participation in the CEV Champions League Volley 2022. Back in late September, AS CANNES found out the names of their opponents for the pool stage of Europe’s elite competition following the Drawing of Lots held in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

AS CANNES Dragons will be playing last year’s #CLVolleyM silver medal winners TRENTINO Itas of Italy, another Italian top team in Sir Sicoma Monini PERUGIA and Turkey’s standout Fenerbahce HDI ISTANBUL. These are very tough opponents for the French team – but also a truly special opportunity to welcome international elite teams back to the iconic Palais des Victoires in Cannes.

Christian Fromm, Oleksiy Klyamar and their teammates will make sure that men’s Champions League matches will return to the French Riviera for the first time since the 2010/2011 season. The French team previously appeared in Europe’s top competition – Champions Cup / Champions League – in 1983, 1984, 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996, 2006 and 2008. Back in 1999, AS CANNES claimed the former Cup Winners’ Cup – beating Italy’s Alpitour TNT CUNEO – and even earlier, in 1981, they won the CEV Cup, thus becoming the very first French club to lift a European trophy in men’s Volleyball and in any team sport. Alain Fabiani, the former setter of the French team, and Laurent Tillie – who earlier this year won Olympic gold with France at Tokyo 2020 – were members of that team.

This is a great legacy and a great motivation for the Dragons, who boast an unparalleled record of 10 national league titles and another 5 from the French Cup.
