CEV Champions League Volley 2022 | Men
We have come to the end of the first week of competition in the CEV Champions League Volley 2022 – Men and what a week it has been, however there is one remaining match to be played, an Italian classic matchup from Pool E between Sir Sicoma Monini Perugia and Trentino Itas.
These two sides know each other very well from both the Italian domestic competitions and European competitions, today meeting for the third time this season, after the semifinal of the Italian SuperCup and the first leg of the SuperLega, one victory on each side.
Today’s match will also be the 42nd encounter between the two teams, a classic matchup that has proved to be quite balanced over the years, Trentino managing 21 wins while Perugia 20.
In the CEV Champions League Volley, the most recent encounter between the two took place in last season’s semifinal, with Trentino getting the win and getting the chance to play in the SuperFinals. In Verona, Trentino lost the title to Zaksa, a team coached by Nikola Grbic, none other than the current head coach of Perugia.
Nikola Grbic“We play immediately against a very strong team. It will certainly not be the same match at the beginning of November in the SuperLega, Trento has recovered Michieletto and it will be a very difficult match. We have the advantage on Thursday to play in our sport hall, but we must think to playing well because otherwise, at these levels, the risk of losing is very high. In this period, we play every three days, we have not many time to training. ”
As it tends to be the case most summers, the rosters of the two teams underwent significant changes, with the most interesting ones being the movement of players between the two. Thus we have four players that played for the other team in the match between Perugia and Trento last season.
In Perugia there are Massimo Colaci, in Trento from 2010 to 2017, Sebastian Solè, in Trento from 2013 to 2017, and Simone Giannelli, in Trento from 2012 to 2021. On the Trento roster there is Marko Podrascanin, in Perugia from 2016 to 2020.
On Trentino’s side, today’s match will be a significant one for the legendary Bulgarian spiker, Matey Kaziyski, who will collect his 346th cap in the Trentino Volley jersey.
After having reached the record holders Birarelli and Colaci (345) last Wednesday in Taranto, Matey is preparing to be even more present in the Club record book, obtaining the only statistically relevant record which did not yet belong to him. Matey is already the best scorer in history with 5,111 points and the most captained player (216 matches as captain).
Angelo Lorenzetti“We will debut Thursday night in Perugia in the Champions League in a Pool in which inevitably we will never have to make a mistake against opponents such asFenerbahce and Cannes if we want to stay in the running for qualifying for the quarter-finals. We have been included in a Pool that foresees the presence of a very strong team like Perugia, against which we will always try to give our best to collect points, but it is obvious that we will have to do the race above all on the other two teams”
