  • This is a repeat of the 2020/21 Champions League final. On 1 May 2021, Grupa Azoty KĘDZIERZYN-KOŹLE defeated TRENTINO Itas 3-1 in the final in Verona to become the first Polish team to win the competition. Nimir Abdel-Aziz (21) and Aleksander Śliwka (18) finished as their team's top scorers in that match.
  • Last year's final was the seventh Champions League meeting between the teams, after double encounters in the 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2017/18 group stages.
  • Grupa Azoty KĘDZIERZYN-KOŹLE's three wins over the Italians in the group stage all came in five sets: in 2011/12 (away) and in both matches in 2017/18.   • TRENTINO Itas have reached the Champions League final for the sixth time. The only other team to have contested the men's final more than three times is Zenit KAZAN (8).
  • TRENTINO Itas won the competition three times, in consecutive editions from 2008/09 to 2010/11 (as TRENTINO BetClic). Only Zenit KAZAN (6) have won the Champions League more than three times. The Italians also claimed a top-three finish in 2011/12 (3rd), 2015/16 (2nd) and 2020/21 (2nd).
  • TRENTINO Itas can become the third team to win the Champions League a year after finishing runners-up, after Zenit KAZAN in 2011/12 and Cucine Lube CIVITANOVA in 2018/19.

  • Last season, Grupa Azoty KĘDZIERZYN KOŹLE became the first team from Poland to win the Champions League. Płomień MILOWICE (1977/78) won Poland's only title in the Champions Cup, predecessor of the Champions League.
  • Grupa Azoty KĘDZIERZYN KOŹLE can become the fourth team to win successive Champions League titles, after Lokomotiv BELGOROD from 2002/03 to 2003/04, TRENTINO Itas from 2008/09 to 2010/11 (3 in a row as TRENTINO BetClic) and Zenit KAZAN from 2014/15 to 2017/18 (4 in a row).

Grupa Azoty KĘDZIERZYN-KOŹLE won the title for the second year in a row

The match was a point-by point one played by the Reigning champion ZAKSA and Trentino.

Trentino put his Sbertoli in the direction, Lavia, Kaziyski and Michieletto on the high ball, Lisinac and Podrascanin in the center and Zenger free. Grupa Azoty Kedzierzyn-Kozle responds with Janusz to dribble, Kaczmarek opposite, Semeniuk and Sliwka spikers, Smith and Rejno central, Shoji free.

First set point for Zaksa and then second as Reyno blocked the opponents in the middle of their actions. The Polish team suddenly runned at 1-4, 

Lisinac immediately fought back, but the match displayed a really good start for Zaksa (4-1). The two teams started a big show, with Sliwka putting Trentino's defense in big trouble and Kaziyski overcoming the Polish block (6-7).

Trento asked for a break after Kaczmarec's ace (8-11). Lavia scored one more point for his team, that was still missing 4 points in comparison to the opponents (9-13), also playing a great defence game. Kazmarec demonstrate to be one of the best players of the match from the very beginning, bringing the score to 15-10 and gifting his team with 5 points of advantage. Semeniuk also continue to put the Italian team in trouble with his serving and attacks.

Michieletto tried to counter-decking, and spiked too high just over Janusz's hands, giving one more point to his team. Still, Zaksa rapidly ran away (18-20 and 20-23), mainly due to Kaczmarek]'s job in attack. Trentino's captain Kaziyski tried to bring up his team (22-23), but the Polish quickly ran away and closes the first set at 22-25 after calling a time-out at 23-22.

 

Kaziysky played brilliantly from the beginning of the second set to get the point for his Trentino, driving his teammates to (5-4 and 8-6). The score was balanced 10-10 until ZAKSA took the lead again (13-15). Trentino 14-17 for Trentino and then Smith scored another point on serving. Semeniuk overcame a triple block and score for ZAKSA. Trentino managed to came back sealing a 16-19.

Semeniuk spiking high restored the situation in favor of the Polish team (16-20), but Trentino fought back (17-20). An incredible save of Lavia on Kazmarech's spike save the situation for the Italian team, and then Trentino overcome the triple Polish block (18-22). A net for Pinali took ZAKSA in advantage again (18-21). A super spike by Smith furthered the situation for Cretu's team (19-22). ZAKSA quickly reached the set point again 19-24, but Trentino didn’t let them pass (21-24).

Kazmarech again led the situation to show that the Italian team didn't want to give up (20-24), but the reigning champions stealed also the second set with 20-25 (set point scored by Sliwka).

 

During the third set ZAKSA prevailed from the very beginning, scoring the first point. Lavia balanced the situation with a 3-3. Then Kazamrech came back with a super spike (4-4). Janusz well served Sliwka, but the Polish outside hitter was blocked by Trentino’s defence and the Polish team seemed to be put in trouble by the Italian one toward the end.

Then ZAKSA continued on his path, with Semeniuk bringing this teams on two points of advantage. A net touch for Sliwka gifted another point to the opponents (7-6) and then the Polish team equalized the situation (7-7; 8-8). Kazyiski overcome Zaksa tripe block (9-9).

Tripe block from Trentino instead could nothing against Semeniuk’s powerhouse (11-10) and rapidly the Polish team equalized the score (11-11). Smith showed his power again, but Michieletto took the helm of the situation and overcame himself ZAKSA’s triple block.

Michieletto didn’t accept quickly yo let the opponents win, but he didn’t manage to be precise on his spike (15-16). A monster block by Zaksa, that played very well both in offence and in defence, brought to points of advantage to the Polish team (15-17)

Michieletto was blocked again by Zaksa, showing that the Polish team eventually. wanted to don’t let the talented outside spiker at all. Kazamrech wanted to close the match fast, and eventually scored another point for his team. Semeniuk failed his spike by touching the net (20-21). The two opponent teams went head-to-head once again (21-21), with a rush ahead of Trentino (22-21). 

The situation run once again to the set point, and Sliwka wanted to close the match fastly, but Kazyiski came back again (25-25). Then the two teams continued on a cat-and-mouse play (26-27, 27-27). Semeniuk score one more point (27-28) and Kazyiski followed (28-28), then Semeniuk decided to show his power (29-28). Lavia tried his best to steal the third set (30-30), but ZAKSA ran away of two points (30-32) and closed the match, being crowned European Champions for the second year in a row.
