VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN still record breaking. The club from Lake Constance is the only team in CEV Volleyball Champions League taking part in the competition since the very beginning.
It’s the first Champions League game ever at Ratiopharm Arena Ulm/Neu-Ulm. Since the club had to leave ZF Arena because of construction defects and after playing one year in an exhibition hall, the club had to move 100 kilometers to find a new volleyball home.
The spectators will meet familiar faces. ROESELARE’s middle blocker Arno van de Velde used to play for FRIEDRICHSHAFEN during season 2020/21.
The home team will start into the game with a broad chest after making it to the Cup semis a week ago against their bogey team SWD powervolleys Düren. ROESEALARE lost their cup game and suffered another defeat against Greenyard Maaseik in the Belgium league.
Dejan Vincic is back on the court. After receiving an injury two weeks ago the captain and vice European champion received the green light from the medical department to play.

VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN v Knack ROESELARE
Terrifying moment for VfB Friedrichshafen in the first set. The home team scored 11:13 but Lucas Van Berkel kept lying on the floor. The middle blocker twisted his ankle and was replaced by Estonian Andri Aganits.
What a comeback for the home team in the second set. After being 13:16 behind head coach Mark Lebedew changed half of his team and did the right thing. FRIEDRICHSHAFEN fought back and Simon Hirsch finished in style (25:23).
The service decided the game in the end. FRIEDRICHSHAFEN scored three aces. Roeselare beat the German defensive eight times.
Mathijs Desmet – the game MVP – scored 21 points for his team with a total of three aces and three kill blocks. On the home teams’ side Vojin Cacic was top scorer with 19 points.
Sad news for the spectators. As the Bavarian government already announced the Champions League game against Knack Volley Roeselare was the last one before spectators won’t be allowed to watch the games live from the stands due to the pandemic situation.
“We should have played our game and we must not just watch what the opponent does. Whenever we played our game we won the sets. In the end it was not enough.”
head coach of VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN
“The key to success was our service today. FRIEDRICHSHAFEN played the way we expected and my team did very well. But I still hope that we can improve during this Champions League campaign. ”
