BERLIN Recycling Volleys

- Due to the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria, the quarterfinalist between the BERLIN Recycling Volleys and Ziraat Bank ANKARA will be determined in a deciding match. In memory of the victims, there will be a minute of silence before the match on Wednesday, and the BR Volleys and their "partner of the day" Vivantes will also make a donation to the relief efforts of the Deutsches Rotes Kreuz. At the same time, fans can also donate to this organization during the home match.

- At the last Berlin single knockout game in the Champions League, Ankara's opposite Wouter ter Maat was part of the German squad. With the Dutch, the team from the capital entered the Final Four in Rome in the 2016/17 season, where they first lost 0-3 to Zenit KAZAN in the semi-finals and then to Cucine Lube CIVITANOVA 1-3 in the bronze medal match. From the former line-up only Ruben Schott is left at the BR Volleys side.

- The record of the BR Volleys against Turkish teams is mixed. In this year's group phase they had to accept two deserved defeats against Halkbank ANKARA (0-3, 1-3). The last victory dates back to the play-off 12 in season 16/17 described above, when the Berliners won the next three sets and then also the "Golden Set" with 15-11 after a 2-3 at Istanbul BBSK and a 0-2 deficit at home.

- Wouter ter Maat and Marek Sotola are among the absolute top scorers of the CEV Champions League Volley 2023, both scoring exactly 125 points for their colours and leading their team into this play-off round.

- The duel of two national champions, both ANKARA and BERLIN won their national championship twice in a row, is expected to attract more than 5,000 spectators. Around 200 tickets have been ordered by the Turkish community in Berlin.

"We practiced even harder in reaction to Saturday's 3-0 loss to SVG Lüneburg in the national championship and pushed ourselves more as a team. That's why I think we are still in best shape for the match against Ankara. We definitely need our strong serve and playfulness again. On the other side, we face a lot of experience with Arslan Eksi and Osmany Juantorena. It's only one match and it can always end 50:50."

Volleyball fans have ‘nicknamed’ the iconic Max-Schmeling-Halle ‘Germany’s Volleyball temple’. Actually, it is much more than just that – since this venue has played host to an impressive number of major international competitions as well, such as the 2002 FIVB Women’s World Championship, 2003 EuroVolley Men, 2013 EuroVolley Women, as well as the historic CEV Champions League Volley 2019 Super Finals back in May – to name only a few highlights. The Hall also plays as hosts to the Berlin Recycling Volleys, Germany's most decorated volleyball club with 10 Bundesliga titles and a CEV cup title in 2015/2016. The arena is located at Am Falkpl. 1, 10437 Berlin, Germany and holds up to 12,000 spectators. Capacity: 8533

"I think we saw two teams on a similar level today, who always won the sets when they served well. In the fifth set we had the crowd behind us and with the good start in the tie-break we believed in ourselves again. This team makes strong that everyone can rely on each other and we help each other's through weaknesses. In front of this crowd and with this team performance, it was just fun to play volleyball. I'm proud of us."

Anton Brehme
MVP of the game

"That was a tough match. We gave away the first set and in the fourth set Juantorena made the difference. Our team is young and to have handled this situation like this deserves respect. We didn't lose faith in ourselves despite the setbacks. To be in the top eight in Europe for the third time in a row sounds solid. Now, of course, a fantastic opponent awaits us, but we want to show what our team, this arena and the BR Volleys are all about!"
