Sir Sicoma Monini PERUGIA v Grupa Azoty KĘDZIERZYN-KOŹLE

Article 6 April 2023

Defending men’s CEV Champions League Volley crown-holders from 2021 and 2022 Grupa Azoty Kedzierzyn-Kozle made it to their third consecutive Super Final after a 3-1 (25-23, 25-18, 19-25, 27-25) away win over Italy’s Sir Sicoma Monini Perugia at the Pala Barton on Thursday. Actually, after winning the home game last week in four sets, ZAKSA secured advancement as soon as they won the first two sets in Perugia to set up an all-Polish duel with Jastrzebski Wegiel Jastrzebie-Zdroj in the Super Final on May 20 in Turin, Italy. It will be the first time in history two Polish teams go head to head in a Champions League final.

The first set offered a fierce nip-and-tuck battle with the lead going back and forth. Grupa Azoty’s Bartosz Bednorz was on fire in attack, scoring 100% of his opportunities, including a successful pipe that brought in set point at 24-23. A kill block by David Smith finished the set off at 25-23 ZAKSA’s way.

The second set started better for the home team and they ran off with an 8-4 advantage. After 10-6, however, Grupa Azoty went on a scoring streak, with Smith behind the serving line, to put away seven points in a row and jump in front with a 13-10 lead, which they no longer let go of. At the end of the set, another series of five points was crowned with a kill block by Dmitrii Pashitskii for a 25-18 win, which sent the Polish team celebrating their third consecutive Champions League final.

The two coaches completely changed their line-ups for the next sets. The home team gained total control during the third set and with six points from Jesus Herrera, including the set winner, they took it by 25-18. The fourth set was a tight battle with several changes in the lead before it was pushed to overtime. Setter Przemyslaw Stepien brought in ZAKSA’s first match point with a monster block for 26-25 and then Sir’s attack went long to put an end to the game at 27-25 Grupa Azoty’s way.

Grupa Azoty’s Bartosz Bednorz and Sir’s Jesus Herrera shared the top scorer honours with 13 points each, and the Most Valuable Player award went to the Polish team’s setter Marcin Janusz.

“We are extremely disappointed because we did not play our best. They played better than us in the crucial moments. ZAKSA deserves to be in the final. They played better than us in both matches. Now we have to move on and set our mind on the Italian Superlega matches.”

Simone Giannelli
Setter and captain of Sir Sicoma Monini Perugia
