    Overview

    The all-Italian clash of long-time rivals opens the competition in the Pool B! Defending #CLVolleyM champions Cucine Lube Civitanova and Sir Sicoma Monini Perugia will lock horns for the fourth time in the Europe's prime competition, all previous games ended with victory of Perugia. It is also their first encounter this season, as their game in the national league was postponed due to Covid-19 cases, thus the nail-biting Italian battle is expected in Tours.

    Aleksandar Atanasijevic, player of Sir Sicoma Monini Perugia: “It is always difficult to play against Civitanova. It is a great team with great players. We know each other very well and that because we are facing each other since many years. This will absolutely be a significant start for this Champions League and we would like to start this competition with the right foot.”

    Ferdinando De Giorgi, head coach of Cucine Lube Civitanova: "Our Pool is very strong, every single match will therefore certainly be decisive for the qualification. Starting from the Italian derby with Perugia, an announced big sporting battle. Both teams are well organized from the technical and tactical sides, as well as very incisive with their serves. Perugia has shown to be in great shape in the last few games they played, so I ask my guys to stay very focused for the whole match, because small episodes will make the difference in case of a balanced game."

    Cucine Lube CIVITANOVA victorious in all-Italian clash

    The reigning #CLVolleyM champions Cucine Lube Civitanova and Sir Sicoma Monini Perugia entered the court extremely motivated. The opening set was a very tight battle. The lead was changing back and forth. With great blocks from Sebastian Sole, the team from Perugia gained 3-point-lead at 16-13, but Ferdinando de Giorgi's squad quickly bounced back. Lube enjoyed an impressive ending - powerful spike from Simon and two blocks on Leon gave them victory in the first set. Sir Sicoma Monini PERUGIA quickly banished memories from the first set with notable start of the part two and five-point lead at 10-5. With Perugia's help, Cucine Lube CIVITANOVA shortened the distance to one point at 16-15 wiping the slate clean. Perugia's block was crucial in the decisive stage of this set with Thijs Ter Horst closing it with this skill. Then, after a competitive start, Lube managed to build a solid five-point advantage that allowed them to win the third set easily with brilliant performance of Leal (70% of success in attack). Both teams being aware of fourth set significance fought hard for every ball in the point-by-point race to 23-23. Again Cucine Lube Civitanova proved that they have nerves of steel, the series of powerful spikes of Leal gave them longed-for win.

    - MVP award goes to Yoandy Leal Hidalgo 22 points, including 20 winning spikes.
    - Wilfredo Leon was a top scorer of Sir Sicoma Monini PERUGIA. He tallied as many as 20 points.
    - PERUGIA impressed in block - 14 points in this skill (CIVITANOVA - 6), 5 of them performed by Thijs Ter Horst.
    - The teams locked horns for the fourt time in the #CLVolleyM, but it's the first victory for CIVITANOVA, as all three previous - semifinal of the 2017 edition and two pool games in 2018 - were won by PERUGIA.
