Match Report
Dinamo MOSCOW emerge victorious from thrilling five-set #SuperMOTW
Article
8 December 2021
The #CLVolleyW rookies THY Istanbul in their first home match hosted Dinamo Moscow looking for their maiden win in the competition. Moscow who had a perfect start to their new campaign two weeks ago was no less eager to upset the hosts in the Super Match of the Week. The game started nervously, but both teams didn’t spare their efforts in defense delivering passionate rallies. Thus, neither of them gained any significant advantage in the first half of the opening set. It changed when starting from 13-14 Dinamo - led by super duo Fetisova and Goncharova - scored 4 points in a row. But even this was not a safe advantage for the guest team, as the hosts kept on chasing the score and collecting a few points in a row as well. However, time-outs called by coach Ushakov helped Dinamo's players. Istanbul saved the first set ball with Rabadzhieva's spike, but shortly after this, great kill performed by Fetisova closed the set.
Losing the opener was additional boost of motivation for the hosts to not disappoint their fans at Burhan Felek Voleybol Salonu ISTANBUL. Led by their Kiera Van Ryk (who also in the first set impressed scoring as many as seven points), the Turkish side opened this part with 10-2 lead. This advantage was more than enough to fully control the situation on the court, especially as they put a lot of pressure on Dinamo with solid serve and played really well in block.
With 1-1 on scoreboard, the teams started the next part with point-by-point race, it first changed when THY Istanbul jumped to 15-13, but then Volleyball fans could see Nataliya Goncharova at her very best, she not only found her rhythm, but was literally flawless (100% of success in attack in this set and 8 kills). Dinamo – first – tied at 15-15, and then closed the set after scoring 10 points with only 2 won by Istanbul.
The Turkish side knew that they need all hands on board to prolong the match. After close beginning, the hosts started to build their advantage, reaching 20-14. Goncharova was far from her performance in the previous set and eventually coach decided to give her break. Once in the squad from Istanbul, coach Abbondanza decided to give a chance to Bahar Toksoy-Guidetti. And it was more than a good choice, as she gave the team important impulse. Even, if Dinamo reduced the gap to three points, it was too late and tie-break was needed to determine the winner.
The fifth set was Dinamo's show. The team under guidance of coach Ushakov completely controlled the game, taking a 10-1 lead. THY Istanbul was lost as they couldn't find a way stop the Russian side. Having so significant advantage, Dinamo struggled a bit to close the game, but eventually fault serve by Polen Unver closed the match.
Natalya Goncharova"We are very happy for having won the game, though we know we could do better. We could play better and make it easier, maybe even a 3-0, but still we are happy: it is an important victory"
captain of Dinamo MOSCOW and MVP
Madison Kingdon"I think our team fought very hard today and we showed ourselves on certain moments. We have a lot to learn from this match. And with our next chance in Russia, compete harder."
outside hitter of THY Istanbul
Dobriana Rabadzhieva"Today I think we played not bad until the 5th set. We fought against strong teams such as Dinamo Moscow. In the 5th set we started with individual mistakes and we couldn’t get our rhythm back. We are on the right path and we are going to work on our mistakes for the next game in the Champions League. I congratulate the Russian team."
