Grupa Azoty KĘDZIERZYN-KOŹLE v ČEZ KARLOVARSKO

Article 9 November 2022

Grupa Azoty stormed into the match on a 3-0 run. With a solid blocking effort and capitalizing on the many opponent errors, they pushed forward to an 18-9 lead and when it looked like it was going to be a speedy blowout, Karlovarsko fought back scoring five in a row to narrow the gap. Showing great performance in attack, the Czech side kept the pressure on to get back to within two at 23-21, but ran out of time for a full comeback as the home team closed the set at 25-23.

In the second set, the lead went back and forth and the gap never exceeded two points until after 21-20 Grupa Azoty’s way, when the home team scored three in a row to reach set point. A rally later, outside hitter Aleksander Sliwka put away the 25-21 winner.

Lukasz Kaczmarek was on fire in attack to score 10 times for the Polish team, while Kewin Sasak spearheaded Karlovarsko’s offense and spiked nine points in a hard-fought third set. Again, it was nip and tuck and this time the margin never went wider than two points throughout the set. At the end, a Kaczmarek swing and a Sliwka ace denied a double Karlovarsko set point to level the score at 24-24, but the Czechs used their next chance to close the set and did so on a hit by Lukasz Wiese for 26-24.

Karlovarsko was well in control through the most of the fourth set, with the help of plenty of mistakes on the opponents’ side. Their lead went as wide as four points at 14-10, but with Kaczmarek still swinging away for the home team, the Poles caught up and took control in the money time. This time, the Czechs denied a double match point to draw level at 24-24, but then sub-in Adrian Staszewski put the ball on the floor for another match point, which he converted himself directly from the serving line with an ace for 26-24.

This impressive ending earned Staszewski the MVP award, while Lukasz Kaczmarek emerged as the best scorer of the match on a total of 27 points, all in offence. Dmitrii Pashitskii added another 15 for the winners, including as many as six kill blocks and an ace. Polish player Kewin Sasak was Karlovarsko’s most productive player with 20 points to his name.
