Previously, Dinamo-AkBars KAZAN and Maritza PLOVDIV met in the Champions League in the 2017/2018 season. Then the Russians won twice scoring 3:0 and 3:1.

Since those matches of 2017, Dinamo-Ak Bars KAZAN retained the captain Irina Koroleva. Maritza’s line-up included then and still includes the captain Ivelina Monova, Simona Dimitrova and Aleksandra Milanova.

Maritza’s captain is a libero, which is allowed by the FIVB rules since this season only. At that, Ivelina Monova is the most experienced player of the team who played for it for seven years straight from 2011 to 2018. In Dinamo-Ak Bars KAZAN, the most experienced is Irina Koroleva, having played for five seasons, starting from 2016.

Head coach of Dinamo-Ak Bars KAZAN Rishat Gilyazutdinov has been leading the team for 13 years straight. Maritza’s previous head coach Ivan Petkov also had worked in the club for over ten years. However, in the last season he left and now the Bulgarian team is headed by Borislav Krachanov.

Maritza PLOVDIV announced one of the youngest volleyball players of the Champions League: the opposite Iva Dudova is just 15. Dinamo-Ak Bars’s youngest player is 17 year-old Varvara Sergeeva.

“I remember playing with Maritza in the 2017/2018 season, but it is a different team now. Their line-up is almost completely new. Ivan Petkov, who had been Maritza’s head coach for a long time, moved to the Ukrainian Prometey, together with all the leaders. However, I think it will not be easy to play with Maritza anyway, because it is a European type team which prefers the combination volleyball."

Match Report

Dinamo-Ak Bars KAZAN prove better than VC Maritza PLOVDIV

Article

The Russian hosts disappointed from the beginning their Bulgarian rivals with a series of blocks, immediately gaining a serious advantage at 8-2. On the other hand, the Bulgarians struggled a lot with their own game, suffering from own unforced errors. Six attacks in out, four mistakes at the serving line, and four mistakes in reception – that was the number of Bulgarian gifts to Kazan in the first set.

However, such an easy first set had a rather bad impact on the concentration of Dinamo-AkBars’s players. Coping better with the pressure, in this part, the guest were leading at 10-7 in their favour. Besides, having gained leadership, the guests got inspired and warmed up. The game went point for point until the last moments of the set, but in the decisive part, Kazan’s players were more accurate and emerged victorious.

In a hard-fought third set, Maritza’s players were close to bringing back the intrigue in the match, leading at 17-16 after an ace by Dima Usheva. However, the home side managed to find the strength to come back and win in three sets.

Dinamo-AkBars attack leader, the opposite Samanta Fabris was named MVP of the match.

“Sure, the three points are very important for us. Today, we delivered a great job, especially in the first set. After that, maybe we relaxed a bit too much, but we achieved our goal to take the straight-setst win. In the first set, they made a lot of errors. In the second one, they improved their defence more. And in that situation, we were not so patient. But after that, we managed to take the lead again.”

Player of Dinamo-Ak Bars KAZAN

“In the first set, the guests were probably, too nervous. Also, we delivered aggressive play on the serving line. We managed to concentrate and played well. The players have followed the coach’s guidelines. Now, we will get prepared for the Russian Cup Final Four, all our thoughts are occupied with it already.”

Sergey Sikachev
Assistant coach of Dinamo-Ak Bars KAZAN

“It was a tough game. Congratulations to Kazan! Perhaps, we could have done more in this game… We tried to do our best, but this wasn’t our best game. In the second set, we came back a little bit better peforming on the court, but it wasn’t enough.”
