  1. After the second place conquered during the last season, Trentino Itas is back as a candidate for the 2023 CEV Champions’ kick-off, with new ambitions and the will to continue to amaze its fans. Trentino Volley’s twelfth participation in this competition will start on Thursday, after 3 victories (2009, 2010, 2011) and just as many second places (2016, 2021, 2022).
  2. It is no news for Trentino Volley to start its Champions League experience at home against a Belgian team (as it will happen on Thursday); it already happened in the 2016 edition. The event beforehand was on November 5th 2015, with a 3-0 victory against Noliko Maaseik, who was the first opponent even in the 2018 edition (this time in Belgium), hosting the opening match played on December 5th 2017 and won 3-1.
  3. In its eleven previous participations in the CEV Champions League, Trentino Volley has always debuted with a victory, except for last time, when it was defeated 3-0 in Perugia on December 2nd 2021. On eight occasions, the debut took place at home, as will also be the case in this edition.
  4. During its long European campaign, which began in 2004 with the participation in the Top Teams Cup and continued over the years in the CEV Cup and Champions League, Trentino Volley had never competed against Decospan Vt Menen. The only teams from Belgium already faced are Maaseik (8 times), Roeselare (4) and Asse-Lennik (2); the overall balance against teams from this nation is absolutely positive: 14 victories in as many official matches.
  5. For the season's debut in the Champions League, coach Angelo Lorenzetti can rely on the entire roster at his disposal, including Belgian middle-blocker Wout D'Heer, who, however, has never played with the Menen jersey in his career.
  • After ending second in last season’s national competition (lost the finals against Knack ROESELARE), Decospan Menen is a rookie in Europe’s prime club competition.Last season’s second place was the best result in our history. We also reached the semifinals of the Belgian Cup, but were eliminated by the eventual winner Caruur Volley GENT.
  • Best results in European competitions were the semifinals of the Challenge Cup in 2011-2012 and 2015-2016. Last year, we were eliminated in the 16th finals of CEV Cup by Las Palmas.
  • Decospan Menen is playing in the top national league since 2000.
  • This season, Decospan Menen did not manage to win any of the first four games of the Belgian league. However, last week they reached the semifinals of the Belgian Cup, which is a major goal of this season.
  • Compared to last season, six players are new. Young outside hitters Seppe ROTTY (Belgian player of the year) and Simon PLASKIE, now playing for Knack Roeselare, were replaced by Jiri HÄNNINEN (Finland) and Maxime CAPET (France). Seppe VAN HOYWEGHEN is the new setter, coming from Lindemans Aalst.
  • Captain and middle blocker Jelle SINNESAEL has been playing for Decospan Menen for the last 15 (consecutive) seasons.
  • The most familiar name of our club is the coach, Frank DEPESTELE, although opposite Lou KINDT (previously Knack Roeselare, Lindemans Aalst and Greenyard Maaseik) and middle blocker Arno VAN DE VELDE (previously Knack Roeselare and Friedrichshafen) have quite some European experience with their former clubs.

Match Report

TRENTINO Itas v Decospan VT MENEN

Article
  1. Trentino Itas former reigning champions start the 2023 CEV Champions League with a clear victory at the BLM Group Arena against the Belgian team Decospan VT Menen. The gap between the two teams was relevant, also in terms of experience on court: the hosts succeeded in each set, jumping immediately into the top of the Pool D rankings.
  2. For Decospan Menen it was a historic match anyway, as it was the first overall match of its history in CEV Champions League after 22 years of the top continental competition. For the Depestele team, it was crucial the hitter spiker Capet (best scorer with 7 points), while the rest of the team struggled to score.
  3. The match Mvp was the opposite Gabriele Nelli of Trentino Itas, who took advantage of the opportunity given by Lorenzetti (who did a big turnover), scoring 19 points with 4 blocks, 3 aces and 60% in attack. Lavia also did well and gained the title of best scorer of the match with 21 points.
  4. With today’s success, Trentino team confirmed the tradition to win against Belgian teams: today’s match is the fifteenth in as many official matches played against a team of that nation.
  5. Today was the 53th match of the Champions League played at the BLM Group Arena by Trentino Volley. The yellow-blue team’s tradition to play before their supporters stays positive: today they won for the 45th time; the team was beaten only 8 times.

Angelo Lorenzetti (Trentino Itas Head Coach): “Apart from the chosen line-up, today I saw the right attitude on court and also the will of beating the opponent. That was just what we were looking for, in order to let some regular players rest and gain the victory; our attack increased during the match and we made just a few errors”.
